The rural electric cooperatives hit the State Capitol in Des Moines on March 28th for the 2012 REC “Day on the Hill” event. Over 250 participants attended this event coordinated by the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives (IAEC), allowing representatives from electric cooperatives across the state the opportunity to speak with House and Senate members. This year’s event was highlighted for the electric cooperatives as they were on hand when the Senate passed SF 2286, a bill that increases safety measures for electric cooperative member-consumers and employees when testing for stray voltage – a naturally occurring phenomenon due to the operation of farm electrical systems and utility distribution systems.

Electric cooperative directors and employees were at the capitol meeting with legislators to build support for legislation aimed at increasing electric cooperatives’ ability to deliver safe, affordable, reliable electricity.

The Rural Electricity Resource Council (RERC) Annual Conference, held May 23-25 at the Stoney Creek Inn in Des Moines, was an educational forum on key accounts strategies, LED lighting, and other efficiency technologies. The conference and a special workshop provided an opportunity to maximize the value of CIPCO’s membership in the RERC, with staff from CIPCO and eleven of the system cooperatives attending workshop and conference sessions.

Over 40 attendees participated in the pre-conference workshop “Helping Ethanol Plants, Grain Elevators & Feed Mills Manage Electricity” presented by Mark Kingland of Energy Solutions-OTB. An optional evening tour demonstrated energy savings, lighting designs, the benefits of LED fixtures and the importance of precision optics in warehouse and office settings at the Innovative Lighting manufacturing facilities in Roland, Iowa.

The RERC conference sessions included application-oriented strategies on how to serve customers and educate them on efficient energy use. Several power suppliers provided examples on adding value to energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. An afternoon "mini course" on LED lighting, including research and field applications pilots sponsored by NRECA and CRN, was led by instructor Martha Carney of Outsourced Innovation. Several vendors of LED lighting and other efficiency products were on hand with displays and informational resources for the over 80 attendees representing power suppliers from across the US. The 85th annual meeting of the RERC, including a luncheon and award ceremony, concluded the conference.
